Low-calorie cocktail 1: Frozen Lime Margarita

Margaritas are so versatile, you can make them pretty much any way that takes your fancy.
In this version, fresh lime juice offers a zesty take on the classic.

What you need
– 120ml lime juice, fresh
– 60ml tequila
– 60ml orange juice
– 1 tsp Stevia
– Ice

How to make it
It’s a good job this one doesn’t contain many calories because you won’t burn many making it. Simply drop all the ingredients into a blender, process until smooth and bingo. Bottoms up.

Low-calorie cocktail 2: Champagne Cosmopolitan

Serve the classic Cosmo with a sparkling twist. If you don’t deserve it, who on earth does?

What you need
– 400ml chilled light cranberry juice
– 120ml Cointreau
– 50ml fresh lime juice
– 1 litre of chilled dry sparkling wine or, better still, Champagne
 – Lime zest strips for garnish

How to make it
Combine the cranberry juice, lime juice and Cointreau in a small pitcher and mix well. Divide evenly among 8 flutes or Martini glasses. Top up each with sparkling stuff. Guzzle immediately.

Low-calorie cocktail 3: The Old Fashioned

Known as one of the simplest cocktails to make and a bonafide classic. It’s the go-to cocktail for whisky lovers everywhere.

What you need
– 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
– 1/2 teaspoon water
– 2 dashes Angostura bitter
– 60ml Bourbon
– 1 twist of lemon peel

How to make it
Combine and serve on the rocks. Phew, you’ll need one after that.

Low-calorie cocktail 4: Sazerac

Jazz up your evening with this New Orleans take on a whisky cocktail classic.

What you need
– 1 sugar cube
– 75ml rye whiskey
– 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
– 1 dash Angostura bitters
– A few drops of Absinthe
– Lemon peel
– Old-Fashioned glass

How to make it
OK, so this one’s a little trickier. Muddle a sugar cube with a few drops of water in an Old-Fashioned glass. Add several small ice cubes, the rye whiskey, and both the Peychaud’s and the Angostura bitters. Stir well and strain into a second, chilled Old-Fashioned glass around which you have rolled the few drops of Absinthe until the inside is thoroughly coated.

Garnish with a twist of lemon peel. Make sure you’re sitting down.

Low-calorie cocktail 5: Watermelon Mojito

Perfect for the summer. Perfect if you just wish it was the summer. This combination of fresh watermelon, mint, lime and rum is light and refreshing and utterly delicious.

What you need
Mint simple syrup
– 120ml water
– 120ml granulated sugar
– A handful fresh mint (if you have exceptionally large or small hands, say about 20 leaves)

Watermelon puree
– 1/2 mini watermelon vibes and de-seeded (if that’s a word)

– 250ml white rum
– 140ml freshly squeezed lime juice
– 350 – 500ml watermelon puree
– 100ml (or all if you like) mint simple syrup
– Optional garnishes: watermelon, limes, mint

How to make it

  1. Prepare the mint simple syrup:

Combine the water, sugar, and mint in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and chill.

  1. Make the watermelon puree:

Blend the watermelon cubes until smooth. Pour through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any solids, then chill. (The puree, not you. You’ve got more to do.)

  1. Create a fab drink:

Combine the rum, lime juice, watermelon puree and mint simple syrup in a large pitcher. Pour into ice-filled glasses. Garnish if you really want to look fancy.
